The Fortune Teller

The smell of peat pervaded the air in Ireland all throughout my childhood, along with the scent of rain on lush green fields. Peatsmoke is a nostalgic comfort to us here. While open fires are less widely used today, nonetheless the fragrance and crackle of them remain to me the essence of home.

This original artwork was created following an introspective walk on a windy autumn evening. Its title comes from the little country house I see on my daily walk in County Antrim. The cottage’s location is so remote that I suspect the coming of a visitor might create a good deal of excitement, sending the inhabitant running for firewood and a fresh bottle of whiskey.
