This is the artwork I painted as a commission for a fellow artist, titled Release, 30x21cm, acrylic/alcohol ink/oil pastel on paper.
I made it on heavy quality paper, which meant I couldn’t do my usual rubbings of the stickmen. I had to paint everything directly. This time I used ordinary quill ink to create the initial marks, but unlike alcohol ink the quill ink is not waterproof, and so as I painted things started to shift...
At first I was aghast but quickly I realized something special was happening. The moving, melting ink became blended with my white, with my charcoal. A shift in my technique, brand new territory…
A beautiful Ah-ha! moment.
