The cottage is an evening song in all of us, a magic flute. It plays a tune from memory on the threshold of the heart, striking deep, resounding, soft as a lullaby, sure as sunrise, as whispered prayer.
I made this small picture in a state of anxiety, wanting to paint with a view to calming my mind. I started with the sky, using strong colours and my fingers to achieve soft expressive clouds. My hands were shaking!
The foreground was painted with finer brushes, finding trees and soft evening sun touching their highest branches.
A small cabin is reflected in the water, utterly peaceful and calm. In the process of painting, I had tamed my uneasy thoughts, transforming them into a place of serenity and rest. And by the time I was finished, I was as calm as the scene!
